If you spend time outside Australia for work, family or personal reasons, your travel history is becoming more important to your tax affairs than it used to be.

On 24 August 2026, the ATO gazetted its latest passenger movements data-matching program. Under it, the Department of Home Affairs is expected to give the ATO travel information for around 115,000 individuals each year, from the 2026-27 income year through to 2028-29.

The information may include a person's name, date of birth, arrival and departure dates, passport details, and citizenship or visa status. The ATO can then compare it with its own records to look for potential issues with tax residency, registration, lodgement, reporting and payment obligations.

For most people, there's no need to worry. But if you travel overseas often, have moved countries, or have a residency position that's finely balanced, it's worth understanding why your dates matter.

### Why tax residency matters

Your Australian tax residency status affects how you're taxed in a few significant ways. Australian residents are generally taxed on their worldwide income, while foreign residents are generally taxed only on their Australian-sourced income. Residency can also affect the tax-free threshold, Medicare levy obligations and capital gains tax (CGT) outcomes.

That's why the exact dates you entered and left Australia can matter when your return is prepared, particularly if you've moved to or from Australia or spent extended periods overseas.

> Spending time overseas doesn't automatically make you a foreign resident for tax purposes. Residency depends on a range of factors, including your family circumstances, your connections with Australia, and your intentions and behaviour.

Even so, accurate travel records can be an important part of showing the overall picture. And because the ATO will now have passenger movement information from an independent government source, any mismatch between the dates you report and its records could prompt a request for further information.

### When your travel history could matter

There are a few situations where good records are particularly useful.

**Part-year residency.** If you became or stopped being an Australian tax resident during the year, the dates you arrived in or left Australia may form part of the evidence for your residency position. They can also be relevant to whether a part-year tax-free threshold applies.

**Working overseas.** If you regularly travel for work, your travel history can help show when you were working in Australia and when you were overseas. That can be important where your return involves foreign employment income, work-related travel or other overseas activities.

**Selling an Australian property.** If you've moved overseas and later sell a property in Australia, your residency history can affect the CGT treatment. In particular, it can have a significant impact on whether the main residence exemption applies when you sell your home. A clear record of when you lived here and when you were overseas helps.

### Records worth keeping

You don't need an elaborate system. A few simple habits go a long way:

- Keep a record of your arrival and departure dates for each trip, including the year the travel occurred
- Hold on to supporting documents where you can, such as flight itineraries, boarding passes and passport records
- Let your accountant know about any significant periods overseas, especially if you've moved or are thinking about it
- Before lodging, check that the dates used in any residency calculation are accurate

> If there's ever a difference between the dates you've reported and the information the ATO holds, supporting records make it much easier to explain the position.

### Part of a bigger pattern

Travel data is one of several sources the ATO now uses to check what's reported against what it can see. We've covered the same theme in our look at how TPAR pre-fill data<https://trekkadvisory.com.au> is changing the way contractor income is reported. The common thread is that the ATO increasingly has its own picture of your circumstances, so having your own records in order is the best protection.

That matters because errors and mismatches can be costly. Penalties for incorrect information have recently risen, as we explained in our article on [penalty units](https://trekkadvisory.com.au/information-centre/penalty-units-increased-from-1-july-2026.-what-it-costs-you), and a few minutes of checking beforehand is far cheaper than sorting out a query afterwards.

### A small detail that could make a big difference

For most taxpayers, the passenger movements program is unlikely to have any direct impact. But for people who spend meaningful time overseas, whether for work, family or a planned move, accurate travel records can become increasingly valuable.

If your residency position isn't straightforward, it's worth looking at it as part of your wider [tax planning](https://trekkadvisory.com.au) rather than leaving it until return time. A few minutes spent checking your dates could save a lot of back and forth later.

If you've spent substantial time overseas this year, or you're planning to, [get in touch with Trekk Advisory](https://trekkadvisory.com.au/contact)and we can talk through your residency position and what records to keep.
